I can be fickle sometimes when it comes to my automotive desires but the want for a car that slipped through my fingers keeps coming back.

In 2000, I was flush with money from working two jobs and living with my parents. I was just about to turn 22, and discovered the wonder of Ebay Motors. Up in Raleigh there was a black 1970 Cougar convertible - in restorable, complete driver condition - and my bid of $5000 was top bid until about five minutes before the end of the auction. Alas, due to my 56k dialup and some slow reflexes, my new bid of $5500 wasn’t placed in time to catch up.

I still want one.

And I look for old Cougars on Craigslist (the automotive section, guys) on a pretty regular basis.

And !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! caught my eye. If I had the cash it’d be in my driveway tomorrow.

Oh man, as most could guess, I’m a HUGE FAN of the Mercury Cougar.

I almost tried to sell the Montego to buy a Convertible Cougar (though CougarMan could be a TERRIBLE NAME).

Here’s a functional one by me for only 4500 bucks. (rough though, but affordable)

In 2002 I bought a 1971 Mach 1 Mustang with a 351W in it. It needed alot of work and I was getting summoned to the Middle East. I left some cash with a friend who was an unemployed college kid with a mechanical background. I was gone for 2 years and he managed to work on the car for me once....a week before I returned in late 2004.

The car was heavily rusted by then and I sold it for a loss. It was so much fun to drive.

Here’s a rough 67 runner in my area:

4500 bucks is not bad... I just love the look of the 70 cougar.

‘67-’68 is EXACTLY what my younger brother has decided to replace his Saturn with when the time comes... we’re in WNC. That one’s a good enough deal and close enough it *probably* won’t tip the balance to JimCramerBUYBUYBUY, but I can’t be certain it wouldn’t.

That’s not bad man.

I also don’t think people get how epic a 351 is in this size car.

the 302 in the Montego is a BLAST and I’ve only added an intake, 4 barrel and dual exhaust. it could be SO MUCH more.

Smaller car + bigger engine, these things must be awesome.

I had a 73 Mustang convertible with a 351C 2v and it was plenty for 17 year old Steve. At my age now I want a cruiser. That 70 cougar would be purrfect.

I’m sorry. That pun was unacceptable.

It was purfectly acceptable.

(I feel like I’m playing the Meow game from super troopers).

and a 2v 351C from 73 loses everyday to a 4 barrel 351W from 70.

but still, that’s the same reason that I don’t need anymore engine upgrades on the Montego. It’s fast enough to be fun, but I don’t have racing aspirations so I don’t have any more need for power. if something goes bad on it, sure I’ll replace with better. But I don’t see myself going out and getting a hopped up cam for no reason.
